Modified Foursome Rules

  1. Teams and Partners

    • Players compete in two-person teams.

    • Each pair plays one ball in a version of alternate shot, but with a twist on the tee shot.

  2. Tee Shots

    • On each hole, both partners tee off.

    • The team then selects the best drive.

  3. Choosing the Best Drive

    • After both drives are made, the team decides which ball will be used for the second shot.

    • The drive that is not chosen is picked up.

  4. Alternate Shots After the Drive

    • Once the team selects the best drive, the partner who did not hit that chosen drive plays the second shot.

    • After that second shot, players alternate shots until the ball is holed.

    • Example: If Partner A’s tee shot is chosen, then Partner B takes the second shot from where A’s drive landed, then Partner A plays the third shot, and so on.

  5. Penalties and Order

    • Normal golf rules and penalties apply.

    • Maintain the proper order of play. If a player hits out of turn, the team incurs a penalty (per the tournament’s established local rules or per the R&A/USGA Rules of Golf), usually lossof hole if not otherwise announced.

  6. Scoring Method (Optional Variations)

    • Stroke Play: Team score is counted in strokes taken to complete each hole, adding penalties if necessary. The team with the fewest total strokes over the round wins.

    • Match Play: Each hole is contested between two teams. The team that completes each hole with the fewer strokes wins that hole.

  7. Handicap Allowances (Optional)

    • If handicaps are used, allocate them based on your club’s established rules. Commonly, you can take a percentage of the combined handicaps for the team.

  8. Pace of Play

    • Keep pace by promptly selecting the best drive and moving to your next shot in an efficient manner.

Friendly Tips

  • Communication is Key: Decide quickly which drive to use to avoid slowing down play.

  • Leverage Strengths: Use strategy on each hole. If one partner is a strong driver and the other excels in approach shots, plan accordingly.

  • Enjoy the Team Aspect: This format rewards cooperation and lighthearted fun—it’s as much about good teamwork as it is about good golf!
